Winter Images – Spruce Lake

For those of you who think the landscape images have been slow to come, you’re right!  I have been taking some, but it’s actually a lot harder to get them than you might think.  Here’s why: First, if it is snowing, I have to shovel myself out.  This takes about two hours and just sucks the energy out of you, so several times I’ve just not felt like going out, fighting the cold and elements to trek through the woods!  I’m going to have to change the ‘sequence’ or something, or there are going to be few images that come out this winter.

It’s also thinking about if you DO go out before you shovel your way out, can you get over what the plow has pushed in front of your house and driveway, are you going to be able to GET back to the house (if it is still snowing), etc.  Lots of things to think about before you even get to go and take the pictures.  And even when you ARE taking the pictures, there is that element of risk.  In the barn shot below, how deep was the snow, and how close to the edge of that raging stream was I?  Well, snow was almost up to my waist, and I was on a rock outcropping (remember depth of the snow) right over the water.

For the stream shot, I was on a bridge on the highway, standing on top of a snowbank with the tripod stuck into the snow to stabilize it.  Someone way off to my left yelled PLOW! and here came a plow, my side of the road, with nowhere for me to go but over the edge and into the water!  Fortunately, the driver saw me and raised the blade on my side just as he went rushing by.  So, it’s not only how to get out and when to get out, but it’s ‘once I’m there, how do I stay safe?’  All interesting topics to think through before I pick up the camera.  Oh…the trees in the woods images (both verticals)?  My back yard – very safe (except for the occasional black bear :-)
