More than Leaves

One of the things that has surprised me is that there are still so many flowers, butterflys, etc., around. Guess when I came up here, I expected snow!  Since everyone is still pulling my leg about six months of sub-zero temperatures, etc., guess that is what I thought I’d see.  So, it is suprising to see monarch butterflies in great abundance, as well as so much other wildlife and color.  This bush had about 20 monarchs on it until I showed up, but one eventually came back.

  1. Wow! Your pictures are awesome Dave.
I guess I didn’t realize just how talented you are.
I’m jealous of the landscape shots you have around you.
It’s not like Elgin is it?
Keep up the great photography for all the world to see.

It is not like Elgin for sure! I am finding that each day, there is just so much to stimulate the senses! Even on rainy days, like last Saturday – I went out to do the panoramics in the next section. Of course, I’m sure there are the ‘ugly’ months; after the leaves fall and probably when the snow starts to melt and before the leaves start to come back out in the spring. However, in Texas, we have about six months of brown because of the summer heat, and then two-three months in the winter because of the cold. So, I think that I have more months of opportunity here, but we shall see! Next few days are going to be cold and wet, but after that, I’ll be off again exploring!

How close were you to that butterfly….did you use a telephoto lens? Or were you just sitting still, waiting for it to come back???

  4. David Warner says:

Just sitting there waiting for it to come back. Waited about an hour. 100mm close up lens, but not THAT close.

Nice shot, Dave! How fortunate for you to be in such a beautiful location for images like this. I guess that all may change soon, but I look forward to the snow scenes, since that will be as close as I will get to the white stuff….no snow in dry old central Texas!

It may be that the Monarch above spent the night in my Cypress tree two nights ago! The Monarch migration is happening right now and Austin is in their flyway as they head for Mexico. I got some pretty good shots of them hanging upside down on the limbs as they settled in for the night.

    Take care.
